In the past, I’ve embarked on quite a few adventures around this spectacular island. The journey to Sapphire Beach from Charlotte Amalie is around 20 minutes by taxi and there’s not entry fee to the beach. Red Hook is a town located on the east of the island and offers a number of good quality bars and restaurants. It gets its name from the red roofed houses and businesses in this area. Mountain Top is on the summit of St Peter Mountain and is a good stop-off point if you are planning to visit Magens Bay. From the viewpoint, you can look down over the crystal clear turquoise waters of Magens Bay.
🫱 How to Get to Red Hook from St Thomas Cruise Port
So, there is a good chance that you will have get to Paradise Point by car. While booking an excursion or tour is typically our cruising style, we really enjoyed our day of wandering in St. Thomas, USVI. It was nice to not have any plans in general and to wander aimlessly. Sometimes the magic of travelling isn’t in the planning, preparations, or organized trips. If you want to enjoy a swim or some water sports in the Caribbean Sea, this is a good choice of beach but is not known for good snorkelling.
Noteworthy Shore Excursions in St. Thomas
Set on a five acre park Coral World features exotic aquariums, outdoor pools and nature trails. Cruise ship passengers can enjoy seeing life on a coral reef from the unique Underwater Observation Tower, pet a shark, hand feed a stingray, wild iguanas and tropical birds and much more. Once on Water Island, there is a shuttle that takes visitors right to Honeymoon Beach. You will hike up and over a good-sized hill and I estimate it would take about 30 minutes to walk to the beach. Explore main street and take the detours onto the alleys, where you can find quiet, shady spots to take a break and some great restaurants. This viewpoint looks out across the north side of St. Thomas, with views of Magen’s Bay and the smaller islands that sit off of the north coast.
Beware Time Traps!
Part of what makes St. Thomas such an appealing port of call is the wide variety of amenities and attractions within walking distance of the island’s two main ports. While traffic can be an issue during the busy season, most cab rides will cost less than $5 and take about ten minutes, so it is still an easy commute. Plus, taxi services operating out of the port are plentiful, especially if you go to the pickup zone just outside the cruise terminal. Havensight Pier is the largest of the two ports, with three main berths along a single pier.
Best Things to Do in St Thomas Cruise Port
If you are looking for a nicer place to shop while in St. Thomas, head over to Yacht Haven Grande. If your ship is docked in Havensight, take a left when you disembark your ship and it will be a 5-10 minute walk from the pier. It is also a fun great place to look at the million dollar mega-yachts that are docked at the pier. From sightseeing and duty-free shopping to history and gorgeous beaches, there’s something for everyone here. There are even attractions for adventure seekers and sea-life enthusiasts.

Most island tours will stop on Mountain Top, a few scenic overlooks, take you to a beach, and a stop for shopping before returning to the ship. Virgin Islands, you might imagine it as a laid-back island home to beautiful beaches and mysterious shipwrecks deep in the azure Caribbean waters.
You should also be aware that GPS is not very reliable in many areas of the island. With designer shops, local craft markets, and plenty of duty-free malls and stores, there’s no shortage of places to find souvenirs and discounted designer goods. Pack light clothing for the daytime, with a sweater for the evening. Most restaurants, cafés, and bars near the ports also offer Wi-Fi. The experience comes with helmets, water, and experienced guides. Enjoy the thousands of brightly-colored winged beauties as tour guides talk about the breeding boxes, teaching guests about the beautiful process that turns caterpillar to butterfly.

Everywhere on the island is touched by these massive and damaging storms. Even though the storms ravished St Thomas in 2017, there is still strong evidence of their effect. Many roadways still show erosion and areas where the road was washed away. Much of the vegetation has returned for the most part, but it is still evident in some areas.

Trunk Bay is undoubtedly the island's most popular beach and is known for a long stretch of white sand and beautiful turquoise water. Right off the coast is the Coral Reef Underwater Park Trail, which is perfect for a self-guided snorkel tour. St. Thomas offers beautiful beaches, delicious food, and an exciting look into the life of pirates. Whether you like to lounge on the sand or something more exhilarating like a zipline ride above the treetops, there’s something for everyone.
Group tours through your cruise line will be one of the most cost effective options, while private drivers will offer you a more personalized experience. You will be able to go exactly where you would like to go and stay for as long (or little) as you'd like. The only caveat being that you will pay significantly more for this kind of tour.
Contestants set up their grills and cooking stations right on the beach from noon to 5 p.m. Join hundreds of attendees who sample the wide range of freshly cooked, mouthwatering chicken wings.
